Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) Has Implemented the Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP).

PLEASE NOTE: ABC Title CANNOT issue the TIP – This can only be issued at the OMV.

Effective 09/04/2018, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) has implemented the temporary instructional permit (TIP). Before attending driver education, all students enrolled must present a TIP to the driver education provider.

The cost of the temporary instructional permit will be $32.25 which is the cost of a regular license. However, no additional fee will be charged when the student completes the driver’s education course and returns to the OMV to obtain a Learner’s Permit.

The TIP must be surrendered upon completion of a driver’s education, along with proof of successful completion of the driver’s education course and any other necessary documents listed below.

The first step is to go to the OMV; a public tag agency or title company cannot issue temporary instructional permits. Below is a list of what you will need to bring:

Minor students aged 14 to 17 years old will need an Original/Certified Certificate of Birth and another primary document. No photocopies of a birth certificate are accepted. Minor students also have the option of bringing two secondary forms of identification. Students will also need their Social Security card, a certificate of enrollment from school (students must be in 8th grade at least), Legal Custodial/Domiciliary Parent/Guardian with his or her Driver’s License or State ID Card or Original/Court Certified Custody Papers (if applicable), and two proofs of residence for a parent or guardian.

Adult students who are 18 years or older need an Original/Certified Certificate of Birth and another primary document. No photocopies of a birth certificate are accepted. In addition, adult students must also bring a social security card and proof of residence. If an adult student is applying for a Real ID, two proofs of residence are required.

If an adult has a valid Louisiana State ID already issued and their Social Security Number is in OMV’s system, then only the ID and Proof of Residency is needed.

The cost of a Temporary Instruction Permit is $32.25 with a possible service fee up to $6.00.
